With a music career spanning 14 years, Cut Copy’s seventh release “Moments” is a reflection of how far they’ve come since 2008’s breakout “In Ghost Colours.” Moving away from 2010’s electro synth-pop, an era defined by lo-fi beats from contemporaries like Miami Horror, “Moments” nods to the present and future. That said, Dan Whitford’s vocals remain as distinctive as ever and there’s glimmers of Cut Copy’s genre-defining sound found throughout.

“Moments” draws on Cut Copy’s music expertise

Although self-described as a melting pot of hip hop and electro, proto house and punk disco, “Moments” is much more nuanced than that. For example, slight elements of 2010’s witch house, found on albums like Purity Ring’s “Shrines” (2012) are sprinkled about. In this sense, “Moments” serves as a bit of a zeitgeist and entry point for further music discovery. To catch everything requires your complete attention when listening.

Despite “Belong to You” featuring Kate Bollinger released as a standalone single, the album really culminates at “Gravity.” It’s a seven minute and twelve second dance track that takes all the album’s previous twists and turns up a notch. That’s not to say “Belong to You” is any less exciting, it’s just more a precursor as to what’s coming ahead. In fact, Bollinger’s angelic folk vocals nicely punctuate the album’s rhythmic style.

When I heard Kate’s voice in the track it sounded amazing. I could almost imagine it as some kind of sci-fi country love song, so to bring that energy to it… – Dan Whitford
